Wow! We surpassed the 3,000 mile mark!
Today was as good as yesterday was bad—way to the right on the “Have a nice day” meter! We would have liked to spend a day exploring Beaver Island, but had to take advantage of a good weather day for another open-water crossing. As we rounded the northern end of Beaver Island, Ron raised the mainsail, then we unfurled the jib. I set a course heading of 280° and we motor-sailed between 7.5-8.5 mph with the wind 60 ° off our starboard bow. Early in the day the winds were 10-14 for the first 20 miles, then backed off to 7-8 by the time we approached Manistique.
We had the open water to ourselves except for this Canadian Naval warship that passed us about noon and was anchored off Manistique when we arrived. A little research revealed it is the HMCS Ville de Quebec, a guided-missle patrol frigate.
The Manistique Lighthouse was our target for 42 miles today. Manistique is the only major harbor on the Upper Peninsular in northern Lake Michigan. This area seems to be an outdoorsman’s dream for all seasons. There are hiking trails, raised wooden walkways with observation decks along the river and lakes, and plenty of water for canoes and kayaks. We took a pleasant trip up the river in the dinghy before dinner.
