THURSDAY, AUGUST 9TH - FAYETTE HISTORICAL STATE PARK
Boat rocking awakened us as a couple of fishing boats passed us at 5:50 a.m. By the time the coffee was ready, Ron had checked windfinder to confirm the weather would allow for our final 50+ mile run. High winds are predicted for tomorrow and we are ready for a couple of stay days. This morning it was cool enough for jackets and caps and the temps never made it out of the sixties. It was a 12mile run to clear the point before we could head west. Two of the trawlers that were at the Manistique Marina came out the breakwater about a half hour after us, but of course it didn’t take them long to pass us.
Mile 36 we rounded the tip of Summer Island into Big Bay de Noc and interesting scenery captured our attention. Not believing my eyes, I grabbed the binoculars to confirm what I was seeing before calling Ron to see the white Pelican. What in the world is a Pelican doing in the U P?
Burnt Bluff on the Garden Peninsular was our final mark to round before entering the little cove of Snail Shell Harbor which is part of the Fayette Historic State park. As we approached the dock, two boaters came forward to help with our lines and within minutes we were told about Heritage Days at the Park on Saturday to include the annual fish fry. So this will be our home for a couple of days to enjoy the activities. Eight boats are tied up along the wall, stories to be shared and hopefully knowledge of out-of-the-way places for us to see in this area.
Check out the park on Google Maps in the footer below!
