The plan for today was to utilize the local bus service to get around town and see the sights. On our way to the bus stop, we met Gale who was wearing a Great Loop cap. We shared stories for a while, but when he heard we planned to take the bus he insisted we take his car for the day. Our first stop was the National Railroad Museum which was 43 acres dedicated to the history of the railroad and housed an amazing number of engines and cars of all types.
Ron was dwarfed by the massive engines and we were impressed by the luxurious accommodations of the Pullman cars and dining cars. We took a 20 minute ride on a train and enjoyed seeing the kid’s faces who were riding a train for the first time. The museum certainly captured the essence of the importance steam engines played in our industrialized history.
The snowplow engine was one of the most unique exhibits. All of the engines and cars were original from the equipment to the wood paneling and fabrics. The museum also had an impressive collection of china and crystal from the glory years of train travel.
We completed our day of train history by having lunch at Titletown Restaurant and microbrewery in the old Green Bay Train Depot built in 1889. It was at this depot that 20,000 fans lined the tracks and welcomed the Packers home after winning their first NFL title in 1930. This train depot remained active until 1971.
After returning to the yacht club we were able to buy Gale and Carole a round at the bar to thank them for the generous use of their car for the day. Another example of boaters helping boaters!Speaking of GREEN Bay. . .this is a photo of the water in the harbor (a major algae bloom caused by the unusually warm summer).
