WELCOME TO NORTH CAROLINA!

We had a bit of a lazy morning, eating breakfast before we got underway from Barefoot Marina about 8:45 a.m.  The scenery has certainly changed in one day.  The cypress forest and gentle curves of the Waccamaw River have  become rows of homes with protruding docks on both sides—we are in the heart of the Myrtle Beach resort area.

There’s no “Welcome to North Carolina” sign, but this channel marker marks the spot we crossed the state line.

Where are you buying your shrimp?

Today’s vistas ranged from this parade of PWCs to a herd of goats along the ICW, which is now a straight cut between rivers.

As one travels the ICW it is easy to be lulled into the calm feeling of the protected waterway.  This morning was quiet, calm and peaceful.  Shortly after noon, a squall line formed and the weather deteriorated and we were motoring directly into 20-30 knot winds; it was slow going, but still protected.  As we crossed the Lockwoods Folley Inlet, we could see the roughness of the Atlantic and were once again reminded of the force of nature.

Just as the rain began, we pulled into St. Johns Marina, which is about 6 miles west of Southport.  Nasty weather is predicted for tomorrow, so it looks like we will sit tight and enjoy a day in the marina.

  1. OK, so what happened to the birds? Not a single bird in any picture today. They must be having 5 O'clock happy hour.
