Plan “A” was to leave the dock at seven thirty for a sixty mile day.  It seemed unfair, after being rudely awakened by the alarm, to fine a heavy fog surrounding the area and delaying our departure.  The fog didn’t begin to lift until ten o’clock, but even then visibility was limited.  Bob and Madeline took the lead because they are the only boat with radar while our masts are down.  It was quiet on the river in the morning mist, but after rounding a bend the Betty L pulled left outside the channel.

We followed suit after seeing the nose of a barge round the next curve.  It was a tug pushing fifteen barges, a sight which is becoming familiar to us.  All three boats sat still giving the tug plenty of room to maneuver around the corner.  The scenery was nice today, although a bit redundant after a few hours.

Since we got a late start due to fog, we pulled in  behind Bar Island at mile marker 85.7 where we anchored in about 9 feet of water.  By the end of the day   another six boats joined the anchorage field for a total of nine, including Heinrich from Germany.

Shortly after everyone  arrived on our boat for dinner. We had to close all hatches for a heavy but short-lived rain.  An approaching cold front is expected to drop temperatures over night and for the next couple of days.

The chicken corn chowder and Madeline’s fresh-baked bread were enjoyed by all and plans were made for an early morning departure.  With only one bar for cell phone reception we were unable to Skype with the kids or publish the blog.  After watching a barge pass at nine o’clock we settled in for a night of reading.
