The Illinois River is a busy place and a reminder that the transportation of goods still requires barges, trains and trucks.  This crane was offloading from a barge to semi-trucks, and at the same time container trains were rolling over the railroad bridge.  We don’t see this kind of industry in our area back home where tourism is our main revenue stream.

We followed a tug pushing 15 barges for many miles  today before we passed it.  We were lead boat, with the Betty L and KatMan2 following as well as a small sailboat with two young woman aboard.  We had to give it all the engine power we had to slowly gain on the tug/barge to make the pass—four boats in a row.  Most of the run was very much a canal, but some areas opened up allowing us to see deer and plenty of fowl including hawks, bald eagles and huge flocks of white pelicans.

Duck blinds and hunters with shotguns have become common sights along the waterway.

There wasn’t much to the town of Havana on a Sunday afternoon.  The highlight of our town walk was the Dollar Store—pretty sad, eh?  Tall Timbers Marina had a nice screen-enclosed area with tables, chairs and grills.  The six of us took advantage of the accommodations and shared dinner while we planned tomorrow’s travel day.

Unfortunately we missed a text from Ron inviting us to Skype—by the time we responded the kids were in bed.  Perhaps tomorrow night!
